It’s that time of the year again, really already?! We are lucky if we are in the high 30s here. As a first time mom, back in 2015, I would always question myself on how to dress for cold weather. Of course when the babies are little, they don’t mind being inside. But, when you have a toddler or preschooler on your hands, it’s a different story. If your kid is anything like mine, they will beg and plead to be out in the snow.
So, What is the proper way to dress for cold weather?
I’m hoping to help you out with this! Because of course we want our kids to be just warm enough as well as ourselves.
How to Dress Kids for Cold Weather:
Dress them in layers, as you would yourself.
Your base layer should be comfy long johns and wool socks.
Your mid-layer should be a sweatshirt and sweat pants. OR fleece! Fleece is super warm.
Out layer will consist of your snow pants, jacket, and gloves.
For Babies, this can be a bit different.
For weather 50-10 degrees, dress them in three layers.
- For the first layer, they should have a bodysuit and socks on.
- Second layer, hat, pants and shirt.
- Third layer would be the wool sweater and booties.
When the weather is 10 degrees and below, add boots, mittens and jacket.

As for moms and dads, layer similar to your kids. Leggings or tights, long sleeve shirt (thermal or wool is best), fleece sweater, pants, wool socks, coat, mittens and boots.
Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to be stuck indoors!
